World Environment Day (WED) is the most important environmental event for the United Nations. It is celebrated on June 5 each year, in more than 100 countries around the world. WED was established in 1972 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, under the premise of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), whose headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya.

The main objective of World Environment Day is to draw the world’s attention towards the importance of the environment and arouse political action aimed at:

    -  Giving a human face to environmental issues.

    -  Encouraging citizens to become active agents of sustainable and fair development.

    -  Fostering associations to ensure that all peoples and nations enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

The theme for WED 2009 is ‘Your Planet Needs You! UNite to Combat Climate Change’. The fundamental driver is Climate Change and Human Sustainable Development. The objective of this edition is to raise national and international awareness about climate change, as well as to spread Mexico’s message on the need to reach agreements at the Copenhagen Summit and, in general, green recovery worldwide.

Sustainable forestry management and eco-system preservation have a beneficial relationship with social development, the abolishment of poverty, mitigating climate change and reducing vulnerability in the face of its adverse effects.
