Mexico is the host of the 2009 World Environment Day celebration. A country with immense biodiversity, and located on just 1.5% of the world’s surface, Mexico is home to approximately 12% of all known species. It’s also a harbor of indisputable natural wealth and value that is not only environmental, but also historic, social and cultural.

Mexico is also among those countries on the continent most committed to the fulfillment of international environmental agreements, in particular those relating to climate change. It is the only non-Annex 1 country of the Kyoto Protocol that has presented three National Communications on Climate Change, and will introduce two more before the end of 2012.

Mexico also has a National Strategy on Climate Change and is in the process of publishing a Special Program on Climate Change. It has been proactive in negotiations related with the Bali Plan of Action, promoting initiatives such as the Fondo Verde (Green Fund), to secure financing for the improvement, adaptation and development of low carbon technology.

Similarly, Mexico is leading the continent on this and other environmental issues, such as the advancement of the country’s Natural Protected Areas and Forestry Management. It has been making a great effort to contribute 25% towards the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) special program Plant for the Planet having planted 250 million trees in 2007 and 280 million trees scheduled for 2008.

As part of this celebration, Mexico is looking to raise national and global awareness in the run up to the 15th Conference on Climate Change, to be held in Copenhagen at the end of 2009.
